WARM-UP SESSIONS

Skater and goaltender warm-up sessions are scheduled throughout September and intended to provide our young athletes an opportunity to get on the ice prior to tryouts.

Sessions will be led by MVIYHA coaching candidates for the upcoming season.  Those interested in leading warm-ups sessions should contact the appropriate traveling coordinator.  Their contact information is listed below.

Most sessions are 60 min , however, some older levels might be scheduled for a 90 min session, and will include edge-work, puck-touches, and scrimmage time.  The potential skill drills for the upcoming tryout sessions will be provided and practiced as well.

Players will be assigned to a specific time block on a given date. We make every attempt to balance the number of skaters at these sessions, so please only have your participant attend the session to which they have been assigned.

Registration for the warm-up sessions is included the Tryout Registration fee.

PLAYER TRYOUTS

In order to be eligible for an AA/A/B1/B2-level (boys) or an A-level (girls) MVIYHA traveling hockey team, your player must participate in the MVIYHA tryout process.  For more specific information about our program, please see the MVYHA Tryout Manual, attached below.

In order for a player to tryout, he/she must:

  • be registered with USA Hockey
  • be registered for the 2023 - 2024 season
  • be registered for Tryouts
  • not have an outstanding balance due to MVIYHA from any prior season

The last day to register to be eligible for tryouts for the 2023 - 2024 season is August 15.  Any players registered after this date may not be eligible for tryouts, and may not be allowed to participate at a traveling team higher than the B-level for girls or the C-level for boys.

Tryout Tidbits -- Getting Ready

As tryouts approach, the MVIYHA would like to offer the following suggestions, in hopes of achieving the best possible result for your skater and/or goaltender.

Tryout Participants

  • Have fun, Hockey is a game
  • Focus on things you can control
  • Come mentally and physically prepared
  • Work hard on every shift
  • Learn from the experience
  • If you had a bad shift/drill, shake it off

Parents of Participants

  • Have fun, Hockey is a game
  • Refrain from comments and reactions in the lounge
  • Help your skater prepare (sufficient rest and a good meal)
  • Use the process as a teaching opportunity (good and bad)
    • Your kids are watching/listening, set a good example
  • Volunteer in the process, see how it all works

In addition, Minnesota Hockey has offered their own suggestions in the link below.
